Our Pet List

Pet of the Month

We've had many internet adoptions so far, and really, given that we are a rural, low-tech operation, we think this is remarkable ! In fact, we estimate that at least 25% of our adoptions come from Petfinder referrals. Thank you Petfinder, because lots more people have been coming in and calling, and we are sure this added exposure is helping the animals!

See below for our listing of New Hours and Days!

Who We Are

Since 1887, we have been helping animals continuously. Originally incorporated as the "Friends of Dumb Animals of Michigan," we've evolved to a more modern name and facility, but we still honor the original commitment to humane principles. We are a "No Time Limit" shelter where no animal is refused admittance with the exception of stray dogs which must go to our County Animal Control. We provide adoption services, requested euthanasia and educational programs. We have a Spay/Neuter Voucher program for limited income familes and individuals and annually hold a Low-Cost Vaccination Clinic for limited income families/individuals.

Adopting a Friend

Adoption of animals can be arranged after the potential adoptor fills out a questionnaire, is screened and approved by our experienced shelter staff. We take our responsibility to the animals seriously, so please understand our screening process!

We are closed Sunday and Monday. Regular business hours are: Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Adoption Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (Adoption Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.) and Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.pm (Adoption Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.).

We are excited about our new hours and days and feel that we can better serve the needs of the community and find more loving, "forever " homes for our furry friends waiting in our shelter for their second chance for a happy life.

Adoption fees: Fees may vary upward to cover our expenses if the animal has been spayed or neutered (all adult animals, 4 mo. and up, as well as kittens 3 lbs. or more and many puppies now leave our shelter "fixed.") All animals receive their basic vaccines before being placed for adoption and other medical needs are taken care of as needed. Cats and kittens received FeLuek/FIV testing, Dogs are tested for heart worm. Basic fees are: Dogs $50, cats $50. Adoption fees for cats we've neutered are $100, dogs $125. Fees can be higher depending on expense incurred for medical expenses. All adoptions of unaltered animals require a $25 altering deposit, refunded when the animal is altered. We do not adopt kittens and puppies out of state.

Volunteering and Donations

Plenty of volunteer opportunities exist, from helping at the shelter with never-ending cleaning and giving love and kises to the animals in our care, to working with the public at art fairs, presenting educational programs, helping with mailings, and Pawtraits with Santa (our volunteers say that's the MOST fun!)

Volunteers may fill out an application, and are screened by our volunteer coordinator, Judy Cummings.

Donations thankfully accepted, perhaps with kisses from Momma the shelter cat! We are solely supported by your donations, and receive NO financial support from any other "humane society" or government body. We are a Companion Animal Welfare Organization - NOT an Animal Rights Group, we spend no money 'lobbying' for anything, nor do we take a stand either for or against hunting and fishing, etc. Our animals depend on you to give where you live.
